How much of the Gospel of Mary survives?
The Berlin Codex manuscript preserves pages 7–10 and 15–19. Ten pages are absent: six at the beginning and four from the middle. Any summary of the whole work therefore has to remain provisional. We do not know the lost opening, and the central interruption occurs during Mary’s account of a revelation.
Which manuscripts preserve the text?
Berlin Codex 8502 contains the most extensive copy in Coptic. Two smaller Greek witnesses, P.Oxy. 3525 and P.Ryl. 463, preserve portions of the same work and show that it circulated in Greek earlier than the surviving Coptic copy. None supplies the missing work in full.
What happens in the surviving ending?
Mary encourages the distressed disciples and recounts teaching she says she received from the Savior. Andrew and Peter challenge the reliability or legitimacy of her account. Levi defends Mary and rebukes Peter before the disciples go out to preach. The conflict concerns revelation, credibility and authority; the gaps prevent us from reconstructing every step that led to it.
Is the Mary in the text Mary Magdalene?
Mary is commonly identified as Mary Magdalene, but the surviving title names only Mary. That identification is historically plausible within later reception, yet it should be labelled rather than treated as something the damaged manuscript itself spells out.
